Well here we are, at the beginning of a new year. I hope everyone had an excellent festive season and brought in the new year with happiness and joy. I’m quite thankful for the last few months as I think in terms of photography I’ve had the time of my life and taken some of my best shots to date. A trend that I thoroughly intend to continue into 2022.

I managed to start the new year off with a nice little walk back up to The Birches/Shining Cliff woods. If you prefer to watch a video of the walk I made a short one that you can see here:

So was it a fun walk? Well, yes. Who doesn’t love getting out into a forest. The only downside is what started out as a nice sunny day ended up with the heavens opening and rain pouring down. I was quite happy for the weather sealing on the Nikon Z6 and also the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III. Speaking of which I got an Olympus camera!!! This doesn’t mean I’ve turned my back on Nikon, I just wanted something a bit smaller and more portable for recording videos on….turns out that it’s also great for photos when I can’t take the big camera somewhere. I’ll give my opinions of it later down the line after using it a bit more but colour me impressed so far.

So back the trip out. Rain pouring down, a brook found and getting faster by the minute as we were walking up the hill into the heart of the forest. The good thing is I did manage to find some mushrooms! The bad thing is given how dark it was, and how much I was getting rained on…..well, I could have been a little bit more patient with my shot. It’s not one I would ever print but it looks good in small format. What do you think?

Carrying on up the hill I managed to spot some baby mushrooms, and you know how much I love a good baby mushroom shot. So this time I took a bit more time over things to get the capture I wanted. The more I take shots like this the more I find myself enjoying taking a step back rather zooming it as I find there’s something nice about capturing the scale of these things and how delicate they are.

Can you guess I made use of the Aputure MC on this one? Really loving that little light.

So we made it further up the hill and my preference when doing this type of walk is usually to keep exploring. But it was quite clear that given I hadn’t been to this part of the woods before, having only about 30 minutes of light left and that it was absolutely pouring with rain making the ground quite slippery and muddy, that it was best to turn back. It wasn’t a completely wasted trip as I managed to get a few more decent shots along the way and know that there’s a lot more for me to explore the next time I go.

Here’s the best of the rest from the day. Hope you enjoy them and I’ll leave you with the question: What are you most looking forward to in 2022?
